"A lot of what I love in photography is composition and what better way to do that than fill your frame with multiple characters" -Josh Olins
For our last project for Christmas, we were given a Vogue Shoot and Photographer to research and inspire our own shoot later on. Our shoot was 'Clean Slate' Vogue 2012 July issues conducted by photographer Josh Olins - a London photographer that is very up and coming within the industry due to his undeniable photography skills and ability. He started his career by doing a Art Foundation course at Middlesex University - specialising in photography and later becoming an assistant in London. However he didn't start with a camera in his hand, he actually started out with a paintbrush and only later found his passion for photography. He has already worked for the likes of US, French, British, Chinese and Japanese Vogue, Vanity Fair, V, V Man and I-D. Leading major campaigns for brands such as Balenciaga, Prada, Giorgio Armani, Louis Vuitton, Jill Sander, Aquascutum, Tommy Hilfigier, Adidas, H&M, Levis, Benetlon, Gap, L'Oreal, Lance, TopShop and the list continues. When looking at Olins photography there is always a sense of underlying elegance, naturalness and strength that is behind every photo he takes - making it easy to see why he is becoming so popular in his field of work. Olins is also famed for his group shots and use of composition to create that unaffected elegance and to make the photo striking - preferring group shots to 'fill the frame' like the example at the top which is a shot he did for Vogue. He has a long standing and loyal relationship with Vogue, first shooting for them in 2009 and doing the Vogue Centenary Issue cover featuring the Duchess of Cambridge.
Personally I love his style of photography, he brings such a sense of sophistication and class to his photos just using the surroundings and the model. He uses a very simplistic and modern style which is a style I favour and use regularly in all of my artistic work so I feel from looking at him my work will really benefit. I think it takes a lot of talent to achieve what he does in his photos with such little and such simplistic props.
