New York is one of the fashion capitals of the world so naturally we had to make sure to go and see at least one fashion exhibition. So we decided to go see this the 'Is Fashion Modern?' exhibition at the MOMA created by Paola Antonelli. The exhibition looks at fashions history over the past hundreds of years focusing on the influences they have on fashion today questioning whether our modern day fashion is that innovative. Here are two of the exhibitions/displays that I found the most interesting:
The Little Black Dress: Everyone thinks that Coco Chanel created the notion of this in 1920's and while she may have progressed and excelled this she wasn't the originator of this classic trend. There were already many variations of this trend before the famous designer adapted it, for example, the 50's classic and timeless look paired with pearls. The title black dress isn't just one thing, many brands have interrupted this in many ways and through history it has involved and changed. Even now there are many variations of the it, Gucci won't have the same little black dress as Balmain for example.
The Jumpsuit: The jumpsuit exhibited was designed by Richard Malone after being asked by MOMA to create a prototype of what a jumpsuit could or should be. He described a jumpsuit as a kind of uniform, something that could be worn by both sexes but has know become sort of normalised into everyday wear. This reflects the time we live in - a society in which woman wear means clothes and men wear women clothes. The stigma surrounding gender boundaries is getting less and less and it is acceptable for people to wear what they want know. I also believe the uniform everyday look reflects modern days professionalism and wealth that wasn't there years ago. They have adapted something previously thought of as working class to affluent.
